Can anyone out there tell me if is workable or not to install Apache(most c=
urrent version) on a Windows Web server?
I am trying to pick up the pieces of a not-so-clean website installation.
(Bear with me please- to say I am green is an understatement. More like not=
sprouted yet!)
Here is what I have:
Website was built on Linux box using php. Site was moved to Windows Web ser=
ver box with IIS, Mysql, PHP.
New webdesigner said it did not "work" right, due to transition from Linux =
to Windows.
They removed Mysql & PHP, turned off IIS, and installed Xampp. (bad idea fo=
r production)
Still numerous problems. (They are off the project now.)
Last night I migrated website to virtual server with Standard edition (not =
webserver) of Windows server, with Xampp, and everything seems to work corr=
ectly.
I am going to install full versions of Apache, Mysql, and PHP.
Before I go thru all that, I want to find out, if possible, if it is a comp=
atibility issue with webserver version, or just screwed up install due to t=
oo many hands in cookie jar.
Thanks,
Brent

It is workable to install Apache on Windows, but if you have any
experience with Linux, I would strongly recommend not to use Windows as
a web server just from a security minded point of view. Linux is much
easier to tighten down (if you're familiar with it, otherwise you'll
spend more time reading man pages than getting the server up).
That being said, I have run an Internet facing web server (granted it
was for a personal web site and wasn't heavily trafficked) from Windows.
The install was painless, the setup was easy, and the management was
exquisitely simple. Granted I didn't have PHP and MySQL to deal with as
well.

It seems folks have missed the crux of your question.
You can run httpd.exe on any flavor of Windows, client or server.
The client operating systems have several deliberate flaws, such as only
allowing two simultaneous TransmitFile() calls (al la EnableSendfile On
in httpd language), and other crippling 'optimizations'. Several settings
must be tweaked in order to get passable low volume performance.
The server operating systems, and I presume Windows Web Server is among
these, do not cripple the network stack in favor of 'interactive' use.
The major difference between these all is the EULA terms about simultaneous
connections and simultaneous logins. Depending on your licensing you may
typically have only 10 logins allowed on entry level server products. That
will *include* every connection you authenticate using mod_auth_sspi and
similar NTLM based auth solutions.
Review your Windows Web Server EULA, and I expect you will find it to be
acceptable for most basic applications of Apache httpd.

Desing is about images, HTML and CSS: no relation with the OS.
If your installation delivers different HTML/CSS output from one OS to
another, then ask the PROGRAMMER (the one who made the PHP).
The DESIGNER has no word to say about the reason of design breakage.
I dont understand why did you accept him to suggest you about your work.

That might be your issue. Also anything that The Windows Operating System
authenticates, so NTLM, SQL, almost anything they use the windows password

Yup. I expect you can extend the licensing, as well.

No - it doesn't - check with the admin lists of the sql and web app solutio=

you are working with. I doubt you will find useful help on the users httpd

Ok, so here is another question in this area:
I just read the response to the compiler issue with 2.2.15.
So: will I get the U1703 (or similar) error using the apache2.2.15.msi pack=
age?
This will be a clean install of win webserver2008 x64.
Since I am planning (or would like) to use the "latest and greatest" versio=
ns on this install I am going to do, how do I find out what is really compa=
tible. The 3 respective sites do not specifically qualify anything beyond b=
ase versions, which I understand since they have not been tried and proven =
yet. PHP 5.3 just says apache 2.2......
Anyone tried Apache 2.2.15 with PHP 5.3 and Mysql 5.1.44 yet?
Thanks for all the great information & help out there!
